Why Radar Technology Outperforms PIR Sensors
Traditional PIR (Passive Infrared) sensors have been the standard for motion-activated lighting, but they come with significant limitations. The gridDOT-Radar addresses these challenges with superior technology:
All-Weather Reliability: Unlike PIR sensors, which can be affected by extreme temperatures, rain, or fog, radar technology works reliably in all weather conditions—from -30°C to +85°C. Detection performance remains consistent whether it’s snowing, raining, or during temperature fluctuations.
Zero Maintenance for Environmental Factors: PIR sensors require regular cleaning as dirt, smog, snow, or debris can block the sensor lens and reduce detection accuracy. Radar signals penetrate through these obstacles, eliminating maintenance costs and ensuring continuous operation.
360° Coverage: The gridDOT-Radar provides comprehensive elliptical coverage below the luminaire, detecting pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles across a wide area. At a 5-meter mounting height, the detection zone extends up to 10 meters in each direction.
How It Works
The gridDOT-Radar mounts directly onto any Zhaga Book 18 compatible LED luminaire pointing downward—a standardized interface supported by all leading outdoor lighting manufacturers. Once installed, it communicates via DALI/DALI-2 with the LED driver and connects to the GridLight server through LTE networks.
The module enables multiple adaptive lighting strategies: dimming lights to energy-saving levels during low activity periods, instantly increasing brightness when motion is detected, and coordinating with neighboring luminaires for smooth lighting transitions as people move through an area.
Smart Integration
Beyond motion detection, the gridDOT-Radar offers comprehensive smart city functionality. It includes integrated GPS for precise time synchronization, RF Low Energy (BLE) and Wi-Fi for local smartphone configuration, and the ability to execute lighting schedules autonomously even when network connectivity is lost. Remote software updates ensure the system stays current without requiring field visits.
Built for Real-World Conditions
With IP67 rating and conformal coating, the gridDOT-Radar is engineered for harsh outdoor environments. It consumes less than 0.8W of power and includes built-in self-diagnostics that monitor system health, lamp failures, and communication status.
